THE ROLE OF COACHING AND TRAINING METHODS
Coaching plays a crucial role in shaping the success of MMA fighters, providing them with the technical skills, strategic mindset, and mental resilience needed to compete at the highest levels. Beyond just refining striking and grappling techniques, coaches also instil discipline, fight IQ, and adaptability—key attributes in a sport that is constantly evolving. As Manchester’s MMA scene continues to grow, the influence of high-level coaching remains a driving force behind the rise of talented athletes. In order to gain an insight into the importance of coaching I interviewed local amateur fighter Jack Cragg.
From the interview it is clear that coaches play a pivotal role in shaping an athletes career. The boxes below highlight some of Manchester's most notable coaches thus far.
Karl Tanswell - Founder and ex-coach at the SBG gym:
Karl Tanswell was a highly respected figure in the UK MMA scene, known for his contributions to coaching and fighter development. As the head coach at SBG Manchester, he played a crucial role in shaping the careers of numerous fighters, emphasising a structured and effective approach to training. Tanswell was instrumental in introducing and refining modern coaching methods in the UK, particularly through his work with the "Simple Effective Training" (SET) system, which focused on practical, efficient techniques. His influence extended beyond his own gym, as he collaborated with other top coaches and fighters, leaving a lasting impact on British MMA. Sadly, he passed away in 2018, but his legacy lives on through the fighters and coaches he mentored.
Carl Prince - Head Coach At Manchester Top Team:
Carl Prince is the head coach at Manchester Top Team, a premier mixed martial arts (MMA) gym located in Ashton-under-Lyne, Manchester. With a background as a former MMA fighter, Carl brings a wealth of experience to his coaching role. Under his leadership, Manchester Top Team has become a nurturing ground for both amateur and professional fighters, offering training in disciplines such as Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, and Judo. Carl emphasizes a professional approach to training, instilling in his athletes the mindset and discipline required for success in the sport. Beyond physical training, he is committed to creating a supportive environment, providing safe spaces for young people to train, live, and learn. His dedication to the sport and the community has positioned Manchester Top Team as a significant contributor to the UK's MMA landscape.
