THE ORIGINS OF MMA IN MANCHESTER
A Fighting City:
Before the sport was officially recognised, Manchester already had a strong foundation in combat sports, with a rich history in boxing, Muay Thai, and submission wrestling.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, the rise of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) brought global attention to MMA. Fighters like Royce Gracie showcased the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Manchester-based martial artists began incorporating these techniques into their training. As MMA became more structured with clear rules and weight classes, interest grew among local boxers, kickboxers, and wrestlers, who saw the potential to transition into this new, all-encompassing combat sport.
The early 2000s saw the emergence of Manchester’s first dedicated MMA gyms, where fighters blended disciplines to create a well-rounded fighting style. Promotions like Cage Warriors and Full Contact Contender (FCC) hosted events in the city, providing a platform for local talent to compete and gain recognition. By the late 2000s, Manchester had become a hotspot for UK MMA, producing skilled fighters and attracting top coaches. In order to gain a deeper understanding I interviewed MMA coach and owner of Advanced Basics MMA gym Tony Morgan.
